The Clements Library was founded by Michigan industrialist William L. Clements. Clements was a regent and alumnus of the University of Michigan. It was opened in 1923.
The building was designed by Detroit architect, Albert Kahn (1869-1942). It was designed the neo-classical style and constructed at a cost of $200,000.
