The DeSoto named after Hernando DeSoto, opened August of 1929 and seated 1,500 movie goers. It was owned and operated by the Lam Amusement Company. It was also the first movie theater in the south with sound! Built on the concept of being a "Talkie" it featured a Vitaphone sound system as well as state of the art fire safety equipment.
The Desoto closed in 1982 and was reopened as The Rome Little Theatre. Live plays are performed here as well as magic shows. Films are also still being shown. Visit the website for dates and times.
The theatre is endangered and funds are short for badly needed repairs! If you feel like helping you can contact them through their website. The Rome Little Theatre is a non profit group.
