Behind the beaches, hidden in the seagrass of Isla Blanca County Park, is this working lab, open to visitors a few hours every day (except Saturday). Inside is like an old-fashioned aquarium - lots of animals and exhibits but very little flash.

Inside Isla Blanca Park is this hidden little gem, with examples of various marine life - some mounted, some live in tanks, and some anatomically labeled skeletal remains. Along the walls, you can read some of the studies the laboratory has done, such as Isolation of a Putative Alkali Tolerant Copper-Sulfide Oxidizing Bacterium Inhabiting a Hypersaline Estuary. Ah, the life of a marine biologist. In plain English, most of the studies focus on pollution of the “hypersaline estuary” called the Laguna Madre.
