There is a plaque in the stonework of the building which seems to relate to the weathervane. It reads as follows: WON ON THE TURF, JEDDAH, 1898. It would appear that Jeddah was the 100/1 winner of the Epsom Derby; ridden by Otto (Herbert) Madden; Trained by Richard Marsh; and owned by Mr James W. Lanarch.
The weathervane has flashes of colour with the jockey, horse and turf in fine detail. The ornate metalwork underneath with the compass directions on is also very well detailed.
The owner of this property has kindly shared some information:
'The story of its origin as told to us (we have lived in the property about 20 years) is that the owner in 1898 was a Mr Skevington (still a family name in the village) who was an inveterate gambler and an interesting character in many ways. He bet all he had on Jeddah and clearly did very well out of it at 100-1. With the proceeds he built the coach house which is the part of the building that faces the road and of course hosts the weathervane. We had always thought that the horse was owned by Lord Wolverton and in fact, have a picture where it appears in a group of famous racehorses of the time, billed as owned by the same Lord.'
