Lake Ladoga was formed in fault lines between the Baltic Shield and the Russian Shield. Glaciation deepened and widened the faults into a trough that was connected to the Baltic until about 10,000 years ago. The lake is about 136 miles long north to south and 50 miles across east to west. It's icebound about half of the year.
The Lake, which is part of the Volga-Baltic waterway has long been important for transportation in northern Russia. In mid winter it provides an ice route for several months. During the three year World War II blockade and siege of Leningrad (St, Petersburg)the only link to the city was across the lake. Commercial fishing remains an import activity in the Lake.
The Neva River flowing out of the southwest end of the Lake connects it with the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic. The Svir river provides a connection with Lake Onega to the east
The Coordinates were taken from a Cruise ship not long after it entered the lake from the Svir River.
