Wharram Percy,was once a thriving medieval community,it is now looked after by English Heritage and is open to the public to walk freely amongst the grounds and ruins.

The deserted village is set on the side of a remote and picturesque valley in the North Yorkshire Wolds,the village was first laid out in the 10th.century,and is briefly mentioned in the Domesday Book.
The village survived the devastation of William the Conqueror,and later the "Black Death",though some of the village population did succumb to the plague.
The village was finally abandoned soon after 1500 when according to a legal document of 1517 the Lord of the Manor at that time Baron Hilton,evicted the last 4 families,and demolished their houses for more sheep pasture,as England's wool industry was taking off at that time.
The village church remained in use for a further 400 years until a new church was built nearby at Thixendale in 1870,after that Wharram church (st.Martin's fell into disrepair through lack of use and the tower finally collapsed in a storm in 1959.
