Architect Horatio Nelson White designed this interesting building in the Second Empire Style and it was constructed of limestone quarried from the nearby Onondaga Nation territory. In exchange for the city's closing a public right-of-way to the nearby Erie Canal, the bank agreed to a four-sided clock being included at the top of the building. In 1875 a fifty-foot addition exactly matching the style of the original building was added at the east end, facing Hanover Square. The highlight of this addition waas a steam-powered Otis elevator.
