The Mount Airy Fire Department was first organized on February 8, 1904. It was the first fire department in Surry County and one of very few in North Carolina at that time. It is the vision of the Mount Airy Fire Department to be recognized within and beyond our community as a fire department of excellence. The Mount Airy Fire Department recognizes that employees are the most important of resources. We also have a commitment to treating each employee with respect for their individual contribution to the organization and encouraging open communication and personal growth. It is policy and a priority of the City of Mount Airy and the Mount Airy Fire Department to provide and operate with the highest possible levels of safety. I.S.O., which grades fire departments to determine fire insurance rates within a particular district, established a grade classification using a 1-10 grade scale (with 1 being the best). The Mount Airy Fire Department’s most recent I.S.O. examination resulted in a grade of Class 3. This is something that our department and the City of Mount Airy are very proud of. Our suppression employees work a 24/48 work schedule, and our Administration staff works a 40 hour work week. Our department currently consists of two stations with 3 engines, an aerial device, 1 brush unit, 1 utility truck and 2 command units. Due to the size of our organization, our personnel respond back off duty to large scale incidents. The Mount Airy Fire Department responds to all fire related emergencies, automobile accidents with injuries and cardiac related emergencies inside the City limits of Mount Airy. Since 1994 the Mount Airy Fire Department has maintained and average of 665 calls responded to annually. Currently the Mount Airy Fire Department is comprised of 35 very dedicated employees. Educating the public is one of the vital roles of the Mount Airy Fire Department. Fire and life safety education means effective, targeted and well-planned programs aimed at changing attitudes and behaviors of people so that they are more aware of the dangers and consequences of fire and other related emergencies. The Mount Airy Fire Department conducts many fire and life safety educational sessions for retirement centers, nursing homes, hospital staffs, city employees, civic groups, businesses and homeowners. The fire department utilizes many diversified educational tools and methods such as: puppets, robots, characterization and a child safety trailer equipped with weather warning equipment. The child safety trailer is also accessible to people that have physical characteristics that would prevent them from using most equipment of that nature. Our department also serves as a checking station for Surry County that monitors and assists with the correct installation of child passenger safety seats. The Mount Airy Fire Department also performs fire prevention inspections based on the State of North Carolina inspection schedule for all businesses located in the City limits of Mount Airy. Our Administration reviews plans for new and existing buildings. This includes ingress and egress of buildings, and making sure that all fire suppression and related equipment is properly installed and operable. Training is also very important to our organization. We offer 9 hours of training a month for the department as a whole, and each individual shift trains extensively throughout the year. This training includes topics such as: code enforcement, fire related topics, emergency medical training, hazardous materials training, safety training, street and location training, pre-fire plan training and hydrant maintenance training. Each engine company performs a fire hose change on all apparatus quarterly and conducts a test on all the fire hose annually. The City is divided into zones and certain zones are assigned to each shift. Each engine company is also responsible for maintaining and conducting available water flow tests for the hydrants in their respective zones. The Mount Airy Fire Department takes a proactive stance in safety, training and fire and life safety issues. The Mount Airy Fire Department continues to try to provide the utmost fire protection service and serve the citizens of Mount Airy with pride and dedication.
