Sir Ronald Ross (see also this Wikipedia entry) was a British physician whose main acheivements were in the field of malaria research

He demonstrated the life-cycle of the malaria parasite of in anopheles mosquitoes, thus establishing that the disease is propagated by mosquitoes. He subsequently published mathematical work on the epidemiology of the disease, the importance of which extended beyond epidemiology to other branches of mathematics.

He was also a poet, playwright and painter. His poetry received acclaim quite independent of his medical and mathematical work.
