Located 63 miles NE of Fairbanks, AK, Chena Hot Springs Resort has become the home of ingenuity and perserverance for low temperature Geothermal use. The waters of the Hot Spring are 165 degrees F, well below the "minimum" temperature of 200 degrees to generate power.
Not one to take "No" for an answer, the owner hired an ingenious employee to figure out how to do it anyway. This led to the world's only low temp geothermal plant in the world. Using the waters from the spring and R-134, Chena Hot Springs now generates a SURPLUS of power from its remote location.
On this tour, you will learn about and see how geothermal energy is used to heat the buildings throughout the resort, to generate power for the resort's facilities (including the hydroponic greenhouse), and to refrigerate (yes refrigerate) their Ice Museum that is kept at 20 degrees F all year using geothermal energy.
The tour is free and is conducted daily at 6:00pm. The group meets at the Activty Center; you may want to go over at 5:30 to watch the 20 minute video as well. The guides are informative and fun and really show the workings of Geothermal energy is being put to use.
