The present church at Finsthwaite was built in 1874,and replaced the original which was built around 1724.
The new church was designed by Austin and Paley who by this time had established a reputation for good church buildings in the North West.

The new church was consecrated on Dec.8th 1874 by Henry Whitehead the Bishop of Carlisle.
The design of the church had won architects Austin and Paley first place in a competition organised by the Diocesan Church Extension Society ,as being especially suitable for a "mountain chapel"
The church is built of coursed slate,with sandstone dressings,the church tower has a clock built into the north side,which was installed in 1919,as part of a war memorial,at the same time 2 bells were added,the tenor bell being in memory of the dead of the parish.
