The Svir originates at the southeast arm of Lake Onega, at approximately 110 FT. altitude, and flows about 133 miles (215 Km) westward to Lake Ladoga, at approximately 15 ft. altitude. Until the river was dammed, widened and deepened its steep gradient, varying depths and meandering course made navigation very difficult. There are two dams with associated power plants and locks. The reservoirs produced have submerged the shallow rapids which prevented large ships from traveling this route.

The tamed river flows through many miles of remote northern pine and fir forests where the only evidence of human activity is piles of timber along the banks, awaiting transport. A few industrialized small cities have appeared since the Soviet era. Little villages of wooden houses are scattered along the banks.
