Brownsville’s Spanish Revival Town Hall was built on Market Square in 1852. A hurricane in 1867 toppled the bell tower and damaged the second floor, but it only took a year to rebuild. Most of the building was remodeled in 1948.

Brownsville, incorporated on February 7, 1853, is the largest city in the Rio Grande Valley, with a population of 139,752. City Hall was once in the thriving commercial center of the city, but most of the historic fabric of downtown Brownsville was destroyed during a commercial boom in the 1950s. Since then, major retailers have fled downtown and relocated out along US 77 near Sunrise Mall, but the central area continues to thrive with scores of second-hand stores selling America’s discards to Mexicans.
