Eatonville, name for Captain Josiah Eaton of Maitland, is recognized today as the oldest incorporated all-black town in the United States. It was one of the first all-black towns to be formed after the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and, on August 15, 1887, was the first such town to be incorporated. Author Zora Neale Hurston grew up there and based much of her book "Their Eyes Were Watching God" here.
