When the Art Moderne style Plaza Theater first opened in 1947 at 1018 Hidalgo Street, it was in what was the commercial heart of Laredo Seating 1,586 with striking hand painted murals adorning its interior spaces and with its large, neon lighted vertical marquee visible up and down Hidalgo Street, it was a destination of the citizens of Laredo.

The passage of time has not been kind to the Plaza and it is currently the theater is closed, sporting a chain link fence across its entrance. Yet even as it sits unused, it still retains much of the grandeur that saw its cavernous spaces packed with excited movie goes of another generation. There are plans to preserve the building, by turning it into a performing arts center, something that it is well suited for.
