This depot opened Ashed County to the rest of the world when it arrived in 1915. It soon was given the name "Virginia Creeper" due to it's often slow service.

The train was a familiar site between Abingdon, Va., and Todd, which is on the border of Ashe and Watauga counties.

On the Virginia Creeper trail, this is one of the four original buildings still standing that was part of the depot in West Jefferson.
