As you drive south down the M6 a large circular dome appears sitting beside the motorway. It looks like some sort of planetarium or concert hall in the middle of the moor. It is in fact part of the road maintenance depot.

Shap is the summit of the motorway, reaching 320m just before J39. The weather up here can be quite poor during the winter, consequently there is a highways maintenance depot on the east side of the junction. Gritters and snowploughs are strategically placed here ready for a fast response.
As well as the gritter, you need a supply of grit, or road-salt. Rather than leave it sitting in the open this large domed building has recently been constructed to provide a covered store and loading area.
As you get closer to the building you realise that the front is open and a large pile of grit/salt sits inside. All in all, it's an unusual building to find in the middle of the Shap moors.
