Naaman's Creek School was originally built in 1805, and was renovated in 1905 to become a two room schoolhouse. According to the historical marker text below, the school may have been the first desegregated school in the State of Delaware.
Also known as Naaman’s Creek School #1, THE CLAYMONT STONE SCHOOL was built on land donated by John Dickinson, the “Penman of the American Revolution,” in 1805. The building was expanded and renovated in 1905. Evidence suggests that it may have been the first racially integrated public school in the State. The Claymont Stone School was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
After being decommissioned as a school in 1928, the building was converted to a library until 1988. At this time, the building was deemed to be structurally unsound. The building was going to be demolished until the "Friends of the Claymont Stone School" saved the structure by renovating it, and turning it into a museum and heritage center.
