Long Description:
For more than 150 years, a certain kind of pickle, the Spreewald Gherkin has been the main product of the Spreewald, a remote wetland region in the east of Germany. For the local population, the Sorbs, the gherkins are an integral part of traditional life. Therefore, the Gherkin Museum – the only one of its kind in the world, does not only depict the history of pickles but also offers a deep insight into the traditional life of the people who made it.
Barn Kitchen Living Room
Sorbian houses were traditionally built with all rooms under one roof. From the barn, one can walk right through kitchen and living room into the bedroom and in the picture below left, one can look from the bedroom through all the open doors back into the barn.
Not only did the entire family share one house, they also shared one bed. The only one with privileged extra space was the youngest baby, sleeping in the bottom drawer.
Outside the museum Gherkins everywhere Gherkin Queen

In addition to the traditional house, the museum tells you everything you ever wanted to know about pickles – from about 100 recipes (including samples) to pictures of the annual Gherkin-Queen pageant.

The pickles are kept in barrels, some of them holding up to 500 gallons – large enough to live in them.

In addition to the Gherkin-Museum, there is another large open air museum less than 5 minutes away. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to check out both places.
