This theater is a good example of art deco style architecture. Prior to the construction of the New Family Theater the site was occupied by the Family Theater.
The New Family Theater was constructed in 1939 and owned by the Martina Circuit who at the time operated 11 theaters in the area including those in Arcade, Albion, Cuba, Dansville and Naples.
The original Family Theatre opened in the late 1920's and was one of 3 theaters in Mt. Morris. All 3 theaters were owned by the Martina Curcuit.
The New Family Theater opened on April 27, 1939 with "The Story of Vernon and Irene Castile", starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Admission was 30 cents for adults and 15 cents for children.
The theater was sold in the early 1970's and was closed in the early 1980s. The town purchased the theater in 1994 and plans are underway to restore the theater and put it back into use.
