Airport Tavern, now Airport Bar & Grill, is one of many taverns along this strip of South Tacoma Way, originally U.S. Route 99. The area thrived before I-5 opened and took their business with it. For years this section of South Tacoma Way has been depressed, however new owners are moving in and sprucing up the area in hopes of bringin in new business.
The following text is from a Tacoma News Tribune article about the current nightlife of South Tacoma Way:
This gay-friendly tavern was pretty mellow whenever we stopped by, with only a few mostly middle-aged, male patrons sitting at the bar. It features a dark, spacious interior with a brighter, more intimate poolroom in back. It gets bonus points for an ultra-eclectic jukebox with plenty of Prince, Pearl Jam and Gorillaz.
