On the Appalachian trail in May and June, rhododendron, flame azalea, and mountain laurel bloom on the ridgetops of this trail section, while in fall and winter, hikers can enjoy the good views. At any time of year, this hike is a good length for an overnight trip, but it does have some steep and rocky sections. Since the driving distance between Dicks Creek and Deep Gap is long, you may want to hike in to Bly Gap (which has no road access) from either end and backtrack. Much of the trail goes through the Southern Nantahala Wilderness Area, designated by Congress in 1984 for its remoteness and beauty. Though the two shelters on this section receive a lot of use in the spring, at other times of the year they are ideal overnight spots.
