The whales were painted by Robert Wyland, a Michigan native, in 1997. He is well known for his art of marine life. Artist Wyland says he created the mural to show the connection between Detroit's lakes and the ocean.
The 180-foot-high mural, which features the family of whales, is on the side of Broderick Towers.
