Long Description:The original cast-iron colonnade of the North Wing of the New
Market Block was constructed in 1872. In 1956, the North Wing was
demolished during the urban renewal craze. These columns were
salvaged from the demolition and have been restored to their
original condition.
The New Market Block housed the unlikely combination of a plus
1,200-seat entertainment palace featuring the country's leading
performers (upstairs) and an elaborate produce market (downstairs).
Portland has the largest collection of cast-iron building facades
outside of New York City's Soho.
Instructions for logging waymark: A photograph is required of
the colonnade with you and/or your GPSr in the picture.
