This marker references Shippensburg's tie to an expedition led by Gen. Edward Braddock to take Fort Duquesne in 1755...it didn't go well.

This campaign took place during the French & Indian War - Braddock's forces were defeated & he was killed during an ambush known as the Battle of the Monongahela a few miles from the fort. Col. George Washington was able to organize a tactical retreat, and was seen as a hero of the battle.

Marker text is as follows:

In 1755 supplies for Braddock's army were stored here in Edward Shippen's strong stone house "at the back Run." James Burd, the son-in-law of Shippen, opened a road to carry these supplies to the west. After Braddock's defeat remaining supplies were given to sufferers from Indian attacks.
