In 2001 A new search and rescue service for the river Thames was announced. This was the first time the RNLI had operated a service specifically covering a river. This came as a result of the findings of the Thames Safety Inquiries into the loss of The Marchioness, which resulted in the loss of over 50 lives in 1989.
In 2002 a lifeboat station was established at Tower Millennium Pier.operating an E class lifeboat.
By the end of 2005 the lifeboat had carried out over 1,300 services and saved nearly 100 lives.
In 2006 the station moved to its current location at Lifeboat Pier. This was formerly used by the Metropolitan Police Service Marine Support Unit.
The above information was taken from a poster displayed outside. See also The RNLI Website
This explains why the station is called "Tower Station" and yet is some way upriver from the Tower.
