This historic luxury, waterfront home sits on the St. Johns River in Palatka, Florida. Built circa 1850 in downtown Palatka this old house was scheduled for demolition in 1990. To save it from destruction the owners , First Presbyterian Church of Palatka, sold it for $1.00 and it was moved downriver by barge to its current, private location approximetly 10 miles by water. The house was jacked up and set on dollies to move it the approx 8oo feet to the barge at the riverfront. The tide had to be judged accordingly so the barge would be loaded at low tide and then floated out at high tide when there was enough water to refloat the barge.
Known locally as 'The Reid House', owned and occupied by generations of noteworthy families, the dwelling was built of cypress beams that pre-date the Seminole War. Called alternatively Georgian, Federal or Greek Revival, it has been meticulously restored with an eye to reclaiming its Historic Landmark status.
