A BRIEF HISTORY OF OLNEY'S FAMOUS MEN

THE OLNEY HYMNS

John Newton and William Cowper wrote the words to many of our best known hymns. These were published in one volume in 1779. (A bi-centenary facsimile edition of the Olney Hymns was published in 1979 and copies are available on sale at the Museum).

John Newton, the reformed ex-slave trader, was Curate in charge of Olney from 1764 to 1780. His remarkable ministry brought large crowds to Olney to hear him preach from the pulpit which is now preserved in the Church. His tomb is in the churchyard.

William Cowper, the famous poet, lived in Olney from 1768 to 1786 at the house which is now the Cowper and Newton museum.

Amazing grace
Glorious things of thee are spoken
God moves in a mysterious way
Hark my soul! it is the lord
How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
Jesus where're thy people meet
O for a closer walk with God
