This Sugar Maple is located on the Beaver Meadow Audubon Preserve in North Java, NY. The tree is along a property boundary which is probably why it has been left untouched for so long. This maple tree is along the Homestead Trail in the preserve and is always one of the most popular stops with school groups that come through on tours. It is a challenge to see how many students can reach their arms around the tree.
The Beaver Meadow Audubon Center does demonstration maple sugaring each spring and they tap many of the maple trees along the Homestead Trail including the grandpa tree. They have found that the sugar content of the sap from the Grandpa Tree is higher the other sugar maples along the trail that they tap.
Although the tree has never been cored for age, it is estimated that the tree is 200 years old from old photographs and records.
