[EN] Senlis was known in early Roman imperial times as Augustomagus and later as Civitas Silvanectium ("City of the Silvanectes"). the waymark indicates the location in the Jardin du Roy which occupies the former moat of the Gallo-Roman remparts which, at their widest point, measured 312m - 1024ft across and at their narrowest 242m - 794 ft. Twenty-eight towers defended the city walls; 16 remain today, some still intact, others badly damaged. The wall was erected in response to Frankish incursions. The wall remained in use into the 13th century.
