One of the most known crash sites in the area, this T2V-1 jet is surrounded by all sorts of stories, from "heartbroken pilot flying over his ex-girlfriend's house and running out of fuel or being suicidal" to "A government conspiracy...(take your pic of) secret missions, top secret equipment testing, chasing UFOs and so on" if you can make it up, it's probably out there. These sometimes funny legends pretty much arise from the rarity of "official documents" or newspaper reports. One thing is generally accepted, the crash was in 1967. So whether or not the newspapers of the time have scanned the articles into a searchable database could be a longshot. Military incidents (I have come to suspect through searching) are not published by NSTB or FAA, unless civilians or civilian property is involved, I could be wrong.
This site has been/is a "Weird NJ" site, and there are on-line videos avail, they are funny as to how conspiracy theories can get started by lack of knowledge and guessing. Still entertaining, but, the truth is sometimes boring or mundane. Stick with me, I can explain...
When I visited this site, a man was guiding a local Cub Scout Troop/Den, and he had a recording of an interview with the actual pilot, and sorry to say, it was just a basic training accident. The pilot lived, he actually flew the plane in, from South to North, it is now oriented facing Westerly (I'll come back to this). A woman in the area, who's boyfriend at the time was a Police Officer, heard the crash, called Police Officer boyfriend, he hiked in to the site and found the pilot sitting on the wing pretty dazed, but alive. Some of the other details of this were lost to me, a dozen or so kids jumping around screaming made it very difficult to hear the whole story. This man had explained he actually met the pilot and had a recording that he played of the interview. Now as to the direction of the wreckage... the plane came in from South to North, but the wreckage lies West to East, this is because of when the engine was lifted out by helicopter, there was some entanglement and the entire craft lifted and spun before the engine pulled free of airframe. The orange paint is to mark it as found wreckage of a know crash, to help reduce reports of a sighted crash by other pilots, hikers etc.. This leads to the "Target Drone Theroies". The engine was airlifted to Greenwood Lake Airport so it could be taken by larger plane to wherever they would take salvage parts, and the helicopter almost crashed from the weight and instablity of the engine load (just a side note). I am hoping to track down the man with the inteview and collecct more details of this site.
There is a stamping of the model of aircraft on the wreckage if you look for it, although with the high visitation of the site, souvenier takers have stripped so much and continue to do so.
Still an easy and intersting visit to make, also a GC at/near wreckage. Exact day and month is not available at this time and I will update when confirmed, year is only reliable information.
