First Train to Jamestown, New York - First of its Kind on Waymarking.com

First Train - The first train arrived in Jamestown August 25, 1860 over the newly laid rails of the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad, culminating a 29 year effort to assure Jamestown's position in the national transporation network. Jamestown Centennial Committee, State of New York 1986

According to the City of Jamestown:

The tracks crossed Main Street at ground level, now an overhead crossing of Conrail. The coming of that first train was a gala occasion in this little wilderness village and the Jamestown Journal (issues of August 23 and 31, 1860) and the Chautauqua Democrat announced its arrival in blazing headlines, while a local band played "Ain’t I Glad To Get Out Of The Wilderness". The railroad was a vital factor in the development of Jamestown’s industries.
