His first successful picture was The Death of General Wolf,in 1763.
In 1773 he travelled to Italy with fellow artist Ozias Humprey to study in Rome and Pima,returning to London in 1775.
After his first success with the painting,The Death of General Wolf,he was invited to join the newly formed Royal Academy,but he refused to resign from another artistic society and violated the Academy's exclusive membership rules.
