Turtle Back Zoo is located at 560 Northfield Ave,
West Orange, NJ 07052. The 18 acres Zoo is nestled within the 2,047 acres of the South Mountain Reservation, Essex county Park. The Zoo opened on June 4, 1963.

Turtle Back Zoo was named after the lines which were etched into the surface of rock formations that resembles the shell of a turtle. These rock formations are named "Turtle Back Rock", and are located near the zoo in the Reservation.
When the Zoo first opened, it was planned as a seasonal children's zoo, and all the exhibits had fairy tale themes, but by the mid-70's because of its popularity, Turtle Back Zoo was changed to a full time zoo and recreational facility. The Zoo has a large variety of all types of zoo animals, some exotic, as well as pony rides and a petting area.

Mon-Sat 10AM-4:30PM
Sundays 11AM - 5:30PM
