Land was originally purchased in 1882 to supply wood to the County's Poor House for cooking and heating. The Poor House property was adjacent to the forest property. The forest was created with an initial planting of 31,000 trees. By 1935, over 169,000 trees had been planted. The Genesee County Park was not created until 1966. In 1971, the first full time Park Supervisor-Forester was hired.
