The top two of these locks form the only staircase on the main line of the Grand Union Canal. The co-ordinates are taken from the top lock which is number 14.

A relative rarity on the canals is a set of "staircase locks." The upper gate of one lock is the lower gate of another. A lock is filled using water from the lock immediately above it; or, from the other point of view, a lock is drained into the lock immediately below it. These locks are ordinarily manned by lock-keepers, since everyone else gets hopelessly confused.

This is a very tranquil area with the only nearby residence the old Toll Gate House next to Bridge 28. Further along the canal to the east are Stockton Locks another impressive waterway system.

Access to the Bascote locks can be found from the track to Bascote Lodge Farm and there is a parking area at the end of the Unclassified County Road.
