We found this big fella (guy? gal?) trudging unhappily down the middle of a dusty dirt road on our way to finding a cache (GCN40P)last March. Even though it was only March, it was a hot and dry day and the poor critter was obviously trying to get to the swimming hole about 100 yards down the road. It seemed only fair to help it on its way.

We handled this gentle giant for quite some time and when we got to the swimming hole, there was a mother and her two kids there. We let the kids pet see and pet the turtle before we turned it loose and although the turtle laid it's very large claws on me several times, it never once scratched me even though it was obvious that it could have easily ripped my hands to shreds if it had cared to.

Obviously, be careful when approaching large turtles, especially if you can't tell a snapper when you see it!
