The community of Baker City was established in 1864 and incorporated in 1874. The Oregon Railway and Navigation Company reached Baker City from the west in August 1884, and later became part of the Union Pacific Railroad. The Sumpter Valley Railroad started southwest from Baker City in 1890.
The Depot is located at 2950 Broadway St. This depot was the Amtrak Station before service was discontinued. Earlier history is uncertain but the original 1903 Sumpter Valley Railroad depot was apparently near this location.
