Stainton is a long linear 'village' alongside Stainton Beck. At one time 5 mills were located along the waterway. The centre of the village has a very small green next to the ford and footbridge. Houses and farms are on both banks so a ford allows shorter access for vehicles. On the west bank is the wonderfully named 'Dreamland Farm'.
30m downstream is a humpback bridge for people. It's quite narrow but makes crossing the beck a dry process for those without vehicles. The school bus drops a couple of kids off each day who then cross the bridge to get home.
The ford isn't too deep usually. Only after heavy rain does it present a serious challenge. The base of the ford is fairly well maintained and not too rocky.
