Randal McGavock, who was a planter, political leader and mayor of Nashville, built Carnton in about 1815. His home here was name after his ancestral home in Northern Ireland. One of the porches on the home served as an observation point for General Nathan Bedford Forest during the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864. After the Battle of Franklin, Carnton, like many other homes in the area served as a hospital for injured troops. The bodies of Generals Adams, Cleburne, Granbury and Strahl were brought here and rested on the back porch until the following day.
