The Welland canal was rerouted around Welland itself in the early 1970s. The main street bridge was decommissioned at that time. The cables and counter weights removed. The town decided to keep the structure as a reminder of its past.
As a youngster I was occasionally awaken by from the blowing of the ships horns as they approached these bridges. You learnt quickly to watch the lights on top of the towers to determine if a ship was approaching and then from what direction. This way you could plan your route to avoid being delayed from a raised bridge.
