From the Smithsonian website:
"A uniformed Civil War soldier stands at parade rest, with his proper left leg slightly turned left and extending beyond his proper right leg. He is holding a rifle barrel at chest height, proper right hand below proper left hand, the butt resting by his proper right foot. He is wearing a flat-billed cap, and a tunic coat with a shawl over his proper right shoulder and on the back. He has a belt with "US" engraved on it and holds a small bag under his proper right arm. He has a bayonet at his proper left hip. He has a pleat down the back of his coat and a defined hemline going all around. The soldier has wavy hair and a mustache. Sculpture is mounted on a four-tiered, inscribed base with a reverse flaring cornice. The bottom of the base is rough, and the remaining area is polished. On the front of the base are crossed flags with the G.A.R. medallion. On the south side of the base crossed swords are encircled with laurel wreaths. On the north side of the base is a G.A.R. eagle and badge/shield. On the rear of the base is the shield of the State of Michigan."
