Carlsbad Cavern National Park contains 113 caves, formed when sulfuric acid dissolved the surrounding limestone, creating some of the largest caves in North America.

The largest of them, the Big Room, covers 8.2 acres - an area larger than six football fields. It is located 900 ft below the surface, is 250 feet wide, 1,800 feet long and up to 255 feet high which makes it the larges cave in North America.

There are several options to explore the cave. One can enter through the natural entrance and traverse down to the Big Room (takes about an hour) or one can simply take the elevator and go straight 900 feet down. There are several options for guided tours but the most popular tour is the 1.5 mile long self guided trail (see map) that takes visitors to some of the most spectacular features of the cave.

We tried to take some pictures of our own but the place is much more beautiful in nature than we could document with our camera:

In a place that large and that dark, a normal flash isn't good enough, that's why all our pictures look a little bit underexposed. So, we bought some professionally made post cards and scanned them to share the real beauty of this magnificent place.
