The two founders of Northfield, Simon and Israel Stone donated three acres to build a cemetery and a log school house. The first school house in Monroe County was built in 1794. This school was not free, it was built by subscription, with settlers taking as many shares as they had children in school. Tuition was $1.00 per child per semester, a lot of money in those days. Being the only school for miles, students came a long distance. It was unsafe to walk through the woods at that time due to wolves and bears in the area. Young children often boarded with families that lived closer to the school. The original school was razed in 1806, next building a frame building, the present building was erected in 1857.
