jaxgreen.org has the following information
about this little junkyard garden on its website: "Christy Frazier,
owner of The Pearl nightclub, has offered us the use of a third of
an acre plot near the club--a prime location in Springfield. We are
currently in the process of rebuilding the front retaining wall of
the site, and seeking donations of funds, materials, and skilled
labor-time to help. With the help of the Emerging Green Builders, a
branch of the US Green Building Council, we will soon be breaking
ground on a sustainable building demonstration: our garden's
toolshed. We are extremely excited about partnering with this
capable group of young architects, engineers and designers on what
will be a priceless addition to the garden. If you are interested
in gardening a plot in the garden, please get in touch. The garden
is for everyone and we can't wait to see what the community
grows."
On January 23, 2008, the following
Springfield Community Garden Update
information was posted on the internet: "Thanks to a very
generous (anonymous!) donor, and a handful of smaller donations
we were able to pay to have the concrete footer poured, rebar
placed, and blocks laid. We were helped immensely by a couple of
homeless men who knew how to lay blocks properly, and offered
their help in a, “hey…you’re not doing that right, let me show
you,” kind of way. The wall is now drying and awaiting a coat of
stucco. Then we can paint a lovely mural on it, to let everyone
know about the garden."
