OBION COUNTY
Established 1823; named for the Obion River, chief watercourse in the county. The name Obion is of uncertain origin. Some say it is an Indian word meaning "many prongs;" others say it wasthe name of a French-Irish officer, who explored the country at an early but unknown date.

GIBSON COUNTY
Established 1823; named in honor of COLNEL JOHN GIBSON who served with distinction under General Andrew Jackson in the Natchez Expedtiion, 1812-13 and in the Creek Wars.
