Small community named after the large bowl-shaped depression created by buffalo who were drawn to the area by a natural spring. Numerous trails intersected nearby. This is one of three similar formations in the state.

There was a nearby distillery here that used the water source here and was known as the Buffalo Springs Distillery. Here is a link to some info about the area.
