"Gilbert Gilkes & Gordon Ltd, formed in 1853, is a UK based engineering business. Our technology base is one of fluid movement, either in the form of pumping a variety of fluids from one place to another or using water to generate electricity." They now also have sites in Houston, USA, and Japan.

Gilkes' turbines can be found throughout the world, both small and large scale.

During WW1 nine men from the firm were killed, six from the local Border Regiment. Like many memorials to the 'war to end all wars', an addition had to be made to include the two men who died in WW2.
