Moses Austin (October 4, 1761 – June 10, 1821) was a pioneer settler of Texas. In 1808, he founded the town of Herculaneum, MO, the first Anglo American town west of the Mississippi River.

In 1821, Austin received a grant to bring 300 colonists into Texas, the first permission for Anglo Americans to settle in Spanish Texas. On his way home he was attacked by highwaymen and died shortly after in Missouri. Before he died, asked his son, Stephen Fuller Austin to fulfill his dream of Anglo Americans to settle in Texas.
