Although walked by everyday by many downtown goers, many have no idea why this unknown man is rowing a boat in the brick sidewalk outside 2 Centre Square. The statue was placed here in 1983. It is a bronze statue sculpted by Michael Phelps from Oklahoma. It signifies the embrace of humor and perservence in the face of adversity. To those of you who know alot about Knoxville, 1989 brought much negative news. The 1982 World's fair was gone and TVA decided to move its head quarters and lay off 600 people. This is also the time of the Butcher Banking scandals. Knoxville was on the brink of total collapse and the statue meant alot on the corner of Church and Gay.
